Family Stories l Chapter 7

Here on our blog we’re shining a light on Mums from all walks of life. In this article we talk to Terri. Mum to Reeva Renee and Daria Rose, she’s based in United Kingdom. Read on to see what she has to say on all things parenting…

What does Parenting mean to you ?

My idea of Parenting is simple. Provide my kids with all they need so they have the best childhood memories but in the same time give them the right tools for later in life, I don’t want to spoil them or even worse, I don’t want them to become entitled, I want them to grow and believe that they can achieve anything they want in life. Whatever goals they want to achieve, I want them to believe that they can do it. Of course, when I say goals, I don’t talk about becoming a huge Pop singer if you do not have the tools to achieve that. Like voice, for example. Real goals, achievable.

How did your life changed after having your first child ?

I am bipolar, so I struggle mentally for many years now, when I got pregnant with my first I was so scared, I thought I will not be able to handle it, but she saved my life and she changed my world completely. Everything that I do, I do it for them, for my kids. So your next point in life, your next level in life, let’s put it like that, it comes after overcoming your biggest fear. For me, it was this one, I thought I will not be able to be a good parent for my first born but here I am now, mother of two, and I am doing a pretty good job, I would say.

In your opinion, what’s the most rewarding aspect of parenting?

I think the simple things are the most rewarding. Learning to eat with the fork, learning how to walk, these kind of things. It is nice to see them growing and become little people. And it is a bhuge satisfaction to know that they learned all these things with your help. It’s not necessarily the big things, like graduating from who knows what high-school or winning an important contest. It is the small things first, if they learn how to do that properly, they will learn how to do the big things the right way.

How is Parenting today comparing to the way you have been raised by your parents ?

The way I raise my children is a lot different from the way I’ve been raised by my parents. When I was a children, I think I used to have more freedom, nowadays is a lot more pressure on kids and parents. Social Media has a big impact as well nowadays, when lots of parents compare themselves with the ones from Social Media. And issue is that on Social Media we only see the good things, we don’t see all the frustration, lack of sleep, all those moments, they are not advertised on Social Media. For example, I always show all the good and the bad in my life, just to be aware that life is not always great and it is normal. With ups and downs, that is life. People need to share more of the frustration moments.

What was the hardest moment in this journey, as a family, to overcome?

Personally, with myself. When I got pregnant with my second daughter in January, she was not planned, I hate to admit, but I really regretted it, I did not think she would fit in the family, I did not think I would be able to cope with it, specially with me being bipolar, but in the end it proved to me that everything happens for a reason, so now I absolutely love her, it was a though pregnancy, I was not ready for a second baby. It prooved to me once again that life gives you what you need, not what you want. Now, I am so so happy with her and with my family.

What annoys you the most about Parenting ?

The advice you get. You get advice from anyone, either you ask for it or you don’t. To be honest, you just need to do whatever works for you, there is no universal advice or magic pill that works for every situation. You have to pick the information, apply it and see if it works for you. If not, that’s ok, try something else. Don’t listen to everyone, it is easy to talk and give advice, I feel we live in this kind of world, where sometimes people believe they know everything and because of that they can give advice on anything. Don’t listen to anyone, do whatever you think it’s better for you.

Now is your chance to embarrass your kid – tell me an embarrassing story

Not really any crazy stories here, it is just a constant reminder from my daughter. She loves to tell in front of everyone that she needs to poop. Like she does not care how many people, or what kind of social context we are in, she just needs to do her stuff and she says it loud and clear, she is not embarrased or anything like that. Kids don’t care about other people opinion, they just do whatever they need at the moment, maybe we should learn from that.

We’re gonnna continue our series, Family Stories, here on the blog, to point out the ups and downs of being a Parent, there is no doubt that there is more ups than downs and over time all those bad moments and challenges they pale compared to the good things… so many good things…

5 Ways To Show Your Appreciation For The People In Your Life

Leave a comment Standard

Gratitude, gratitude. It reciprocates and it helps us to enjoy life more. It sounds easy to put in practice, but I feel like many of us just don’t. Reasons?Really have no clue, but its benefits could convince you. So below, there’s 5 simple reasons to show gratitude or appreciation to people in your life.

1. Try to be an active listener

Really listening to what others have to say it is pretty important. It is a sign that we respect them and their work or time. It is annoying when you are talking about something, either at the office in a meeting, or when you go out in town with a bunch of friends and people are not listening to you. They either scroll on Social Media, look for shoes or God knows what else, there are always people who are not listening. It makes you feel pretty bad, like whatever you are saying makes no sense or is not interesting at all, when it’s really not like that. Try to stay off your phone in social situations like going out, job meetings or dinner with your loved ones. Pay attention to what they have to say, you never know what kind of information you may get and they will pay you back the same way, by actually listening to your opinion and what you have to say. It is a form of respect…

2. Give out compliments

I know, it is kinda of hard when we only see problems everywhere. But life is made out of problems, good problems. Take a look at the big problem, split it in small steps then whenever a step is completed by yourself or someone else, just give it a go. Giver yourself a compliment or give the other person a compliment for a job done. Again, we are creatures of habit, we are what we repeatedly do. So after you started doing this and see some minor benefits, try to do it on a regular basis. Now, please don’t go too far. Don’t compliment same person every day twice, 5 days a week and a weekend reminder…

3. Donate to a charity

Again, we have bills, kids to support, a household to run. But, it does not have to be a crazy amount of money each month. It could be something small, like whatever you can afford, or you don’t even have to donate money, it could be something else. You might think that if you donate 20 USD monthly, that is a really small amount and no one is actually going to benefit, so why to donate in the first place ? Well, imagine a small community of individuals, like 1000 people. If each person in this community donates 5 dollars to a charity or for a good cause, the total would be 5000 USD, which is not that bad. This just from a small amount of people. It will also make us feel better about ourselves, by realising how much we actually have, but we are never aware of it. Let’s try it out.. it does not hurt.

4. Smile more.

Again, I feel we don’t smile as we should. We can always find some reasons to smile I guess, though sometimes it can be difficult, depending on what’s happening in our lifes. A nice sunshine, a blue ski, a good conversation, fresh bed sheets or a hot shower, all these little things have the power to make us smile. And if we cannot find joy in the small things, right now in our lifes, how are we going to be able to find happiness and joy in the big ones ? Also, smiling is contagious. No more words needed here, we all know what do we have to do.

5. Tip well for a good service.

Like really. I’ve been working myself in the Food and Beverage Industry and honestly, it is tough. You have to run like a dog, everybody wants more Coke, fresh ketchup, fries are cold, kitchen is looking for you because your ticket is messed up and so on. Been there, done that. If your server is doing a great job please take good care of him. This might be different in EU, AU or USA but I am sure there is some sort of standard. I remember when I was working back in the days and I had a big table of 10-15 people. Service went great, nothing to complain, expensive wine and food. They all smiled to me when they left (remember reason no. 4) and I smiled back to them because we smile and we are grateful and they tipped me like 5% on a pretty big bill. Dissapointed. Don’t be like that.

5 simple and handy ways to show appreciation to people in our life. I am sure there is a ton of ways out there, but I tried to sum up just a few, enough not to get you bored but interested…

To have or not to have a dog

Leave a comment Standard

Topic of the day: to have or not to have a dog. In this article I will try to shine a light on PROS and CONS of having a dog in your household.

The idea is simple, Pro’s and Cons. I will start with Pro’s.

  • Dogs are fun and emphatic – like I mean it, lots of fun, lots of love

I rememeber when I was a child, growing up in my parents house. We used to have a German Sheppard puppy. He was the after school joy, always in the mood to play around, always cheer me up when I was not in my best mood. Unconditional love and joy. Snuggle on the couch with him, running in the backyard, barking. (him, not me, just in case anyone’s wondering) Not sure if it happens to every dog owner out there, but they have a weird, funny habit. They love stealing either a shoe or a sock. I don’t really understand where is coming from, at those specific moments I used to get annoyed, but now when I look back, I really don’t care anymore about socks or shoes. Also, a dog has the ability to understand you, he does not need words. If you had a bad day, he is going to notice that and he will try to make you happy. Funny thing is, most of the times he is able to do that. If you are sad, he is going to be pretty sad too, if happy, well, he is happy too.

  • Reminder of being more present in our lifes

It is simple and maybe we should all learn from that. When a dog is tired, he takes a nap, if he is hungry he eats or asks for food, or if he is in the mood to play that’s what he is going to do. Nothing more, nothing less. They don’t really think of what happened yesterday, or what is going to happen tomorrow, worries, fears and all the miracles of the human brain. They just enjoy the present moment, whatever would that be and that’s it. A small lesson for joy and happiness maybe.

  • Incredibly loyal and unconditional love. Period

He really does not care if you gained pounds or lost pounds, he will not judge you if you are having a terrible hangover, lost your job, payed your taxes or whatever mentioned. He is there no matter what. As mentioned above, unconditional love. Have you ever watched those videos at the airport with American soldiers coming back home and surprising their dogs? The amount of joy, the sounds they make or how they jump in the owner’s arms says it all. Love, no words needed, no description, no hashtags, just love in its pure form.

Now the fun part, it is not all glamorous and bling- bling, we know that, let’s see some of the CONs of having a dog.

  • Maintenance

Having a dog is more work than you may think. Specially on the maintenance side, let’s put it like that. Some of them need to be brushed from time to time, or maybe their nails need to be clipped once in a while, bath, medical tests and insurance, bath, you name it. Having a dog is so so rewarding but in the same time it is a pretty big responsability. If you want him happy and you want him to give you back some of that happiness you have to take care of thim. Period.

  • Attention

They need it. Like really. They need your attention, they need you to play with them often, annoy them, spend some time with them or take them for a short walk in the morning or afternoon. They really feel things emotionally and they are not afraid to show it, if they are left alone, they feel that way and it is going to impact them in a negative way. If not sure you can provide the attention needed or you do not really have the time for that it is better not to buy or adopt a dog, just for now. There is nothing more sad than a sad dog. Well maybe there is, but it is still pretty sad.

  • It is pretty expensive to own a dog

Another pretty big thing to take in consideration. Owning a dog is pretty expensive, with all the toys, food, medical expenses or any other accesories, they all add up to the budget you know. So I would say at the end of the month if you do the math you would probably need a few extra bucks in the pocket just for them. So be aware of your budgets, you don’t want to buy him and feed him with grass, no no, not going to work.

All done, Tremo friends. A few PROS and CONS of owning a dog. In my opinion, it is a big responsability, honestly, but the rewards are pretty amazing to be honest. So think about it...

5 Mom Influencers to follow on Instagram

Leave a comment Standard

I had a thought this morning and I decided to write it down. Best spot ? On our blog, of course, so stay tuned !

A random idea popped up in my head this morning. I guess the rainy days of London can become a good source of inspiration. (just sometimes, I don’t like rain) So I decided to share it on our Blog and I picked 5 Influencers with relevant content for different topics in a Mum’s life. Topics are mentioned below, alongisde with a personal point of view for each one of them.

  • Nutrition for babies/toddlers
  • Parenting Humor
  • Educational tips for babies/toddlers
  • Fashion and style for Mums
  • Workout for Mums

Nutrition for babies/toddlers – Annabel Karmel

First topic picked is Nutrition. From my perspective, this is one is one of the most important topics in our kids lifes. We want them to grow healthy and happy. I consider myself a little bit obsessed when it comes to Health both physically and mentally so I try to be very careful with what I eat, what kind of Information I consume or how do I talk with myself. Going back to Nutrition though, I picked Annabel’s profile due to a few reasons. She is a Mom herself and a writer about Nutrition so obviously she is providing accurate information on topic. On her wesite, recipes are divided by age range, meal times, dish types , ingredients, family and much more. So everything you need, divided by category and also lots of accurate information about other topics as well. So, good place to start, check it out !

Parenting Humor – Stay at Homies

Humor. Important. Actually very important, according to some researchers. I don’t know where they from, don’t ask me that. The idea is that laughing is a small joy, we all had at least one moment in our daily lifes when we were about to punch someone in the face but we read that good joke, or we heard that funny person saying who knows what. Humor and laughing in general makes life easier, smiling and giggling is a must. There is a saying I like “don’t take yourself too seriously”. I guess it says a lot. So go ahead, scroll down her Feed for some funny Parenting Stuff, there is no need for description. Humor is just humor.

Educational tips for our babies/toddlers – simplylearning

Education starts when you are young. Very young in some cases. Pretty much that is a time-frame when you don’t feel pressured yet by things like bills, career, Netflix’s latest TV Shows or all the other joys of the capitalist world. So this is the point where you spark creativity in your kid, now it’s the time to discover things and play around. Kaitlyn is a Mom herself, a home educator and her motto is “making learning manageable and fun” for the busy moms out there, aka all moms. So go ahead, check her website and her Instagram account, you might find useful stuff !

Fashion and Style for Mums – Christine Andrew

Oh boy. Only if they would have the time needed. Style does not need any kind of description, is something most of us like I guess, we all want to look good and feel good. Luckily, nowadays you can find pretty much anything you like in regards of Styling and Fashion, there’s always deals everywhere and also lots of small brands with not so pricey outfits. Our choice on this topic is Christine from hellofashionblog. Inspiring outfits, beauty tips, travel and family, all in one place. Check out her feed and blog, it is inspiring indeed !

Workout – Ebonny Fowler

Working out is crazy nowadays. Everywhere on TV, Ads, Radio or whatever the importance of working out is highlighted and for a good reason. Fitness does not have to be that crazy schedule of waking up at 5 AM to go to the gym and stuff yourself with a bunch of supplements, strict dieting or “red pills” stuff where you get a six-pack overnight. No, the idea behind is that we need to move more, stretch our bodies and muscles. That’s it. I feel like this is a direct result of our lifestyle – sitting down way too much, either at the office or our own car or just laying down on the couch too much. This has to be compensated somehow. Find time for a few minutes of home workout everyday, Pilates, Yoga or walk more instead of driving, all these small actions add up and they make your body better. Our mention here is Ebonny Fowler, her profile has lots of simple workouts divided by muscle groups, with/without equipment and some of them can be executed from home. Check it out.

This was it pretty much. The Tuesday morning thought. I really hope you enjoyed it and most important I hope you’ve got some good insights out of it. Remember, information is key…

Today marks exactly 44 days until the big day! Here at Tremo Books, we’ll be giving you all the tools to have the best Christmas.

Every week we’ll be posting three seasonal challenges – they might make for ideal photography sessions or fun activities for all the family.  Right up until Christmas you’ll have 24 things to get stuck into. Share your photos using the hashtag #TremoChristmas.

This week we’re focussing on how to kick your Christmas prep off in style! The countdown to Black Friday and your Christmas shopping is well and truly on. Have a read of our next three seasonal challenges to kick off the festive period.

1. Write a letter to Santa

santa-clause-3010837_1920

This is a great activity to do with your kids. Bring out the cookies and hot chocolates to turn this into a real festive evening. There’s even a variety of organisations you can send it to who will even write back! If you’re in the UK the address you need is:

Santa/Father Christmas,
Santa’s Grotto,
Reindeerland,
XM4 5HQ

Unfortunately, Santa is very busy this time of year so using the address above, he might not have time to reply to everyone. Make an evening of it though and it’s an easy way of finding out what your kid wants this Christmas!

Santa is working with the Royal Institute of Blind People this year so if your child is blind or partially sighted then the address you need is: Santa Claus, RNIB, Midgate House, Peterborough, PE1 1TN. Santa’s elves will then send a reply in braille/large print. Alongside the letter include the child’s name, age and home address, a telephone number (in case there’s a query), as well as what format you require – either uncontracted or contracted Braille, a specific large font size, or audio CD. Make sure you get the letters sent in by 2nd December to make sure you get a reply. If you miss this deadline then Santa also has emails! Send an email before 20th December to santa@rnib.org.uk and you’ll get a reply.

2. Something you’re reading

Christmas shouldn’t be stressful so make sure you take time to relax. There are so many activities you can get stuck into. Whether you’re into e-readers or your traditional paperback book there’s a book out there for everyone. This time of year is a perfect time to pick up bargain Christmas books. Grab a hot drink and turn your reading session into some photgraphy.

3. Christmas Lights are here!

Christmas lights have started to spring up across the UK and beyond. It won’t be long before they get turned on in your area. They can make for some amazing festive photos. All you need is a tripod – or something to rest your camera on. If you’re going when it’s dark, set a fairly high ISO around 800. Use a quick shutter speed to reduce camera shake. The important thing to remember is experimenting is a good thing! You might get loads of dodgy pictures but the great ones will make it all worth it!

“I lost my job when I had my first baby, as we lost funding in the government changes, I was on a contract and no…”

“…one was going to give a 4 months pregnant person a new job, in the end it was a blessing in disguise. I gained a new little best friend, we bought our first house and we got married. So the point here is, looking back at this trial in my life, which at that point was considered a small tragedy, it actually got me where I am here today. And we evolve from these things, from the hardships we overcome, throughout life.”

Through our Family Insights, we are trying to give a glimpse into what it actually means to be a Parent, it is not always glamorous and fun, sometimes it involves struggles and difficulties, but we aim to provide honesty and motivation, to understand that happiness comes from overcoming obstacles…

Family Stories l Chapter 6

Leave a comment Standard

Here on our blog we’re shining a light on Mums from all walks of life. In this article we talk to Hailey. Mum to Lidiana Allegra and Gia she’s based in Australia. Read on to see what she has to say on all things parenting…

What does Parenting mean to you ?

Parenting to me is getting to enjoy and re live your childhood and enjoy the simple things through the eyes of a child. Sometimes, as an adult we forget to enjoy the small things and we concentrate on these big goals that we all have like career for example. This kidnaps from us the simple things sometimes and for some reason, simple things bring us the so called joy and happyness. Parenting is hard but I choose to enjoy all of it even the mundane. Don’t get me wrong I am far from perfect and I have my moments. But le’t not chase perfection I say.

How did your life change after having your first child?

It changed a lot, honestly. None of my friends had kids so I lost a lot of friends as they didn’t understand. We may not have been prepared to have a baby but we became stronger and she made us focus on different things to give her the best life. We were travelling a lot and not saving a penny and as soon as we found out we changed our life direction. So, basically, our life changed completely. From our approach to finances or to find the best way to give her the proper tools to develop as an adult, losing friends, adjusting priorities, everything changed. We’re still the same persons, we still enjoy doing some things in our own way, so in essence we are the same, but with a completely new approach to life. All, in a blink of an eye.

In your opinion, what’s the most rewarding aspect of parenting?

Everything, but when they run up to you and wrap their little arms around you and say “I love you…” nothing is better than that feeling. It’s something that cannot be really explained, you have to feel it, it is such a different type of satisfaction, nothing else that you achieve professionally or who knows what, it’s going to give you the same feelings. At least for me. Also, I love watching them do new things, ohhh baby laughs and smiles, there is so much to love and cherish. Life is a blessing indeed.

How is Parenting today comparing to the way you have been raised by your parents ?

Hmmm this is hard for me. I guess a lot more relaxed back then and we were very poor. I think that is why I try to give my girls lots of experiences and holidays and camping. I think it might be a thing that each parent experiences in some way, they try to give their kids whatever was missing from their childhood, be it some sort of education, a more stable financial situation, affection and so on. I am not sure, I am curious to see other stories, it would be an interesting insight.

What was the hardest moment in this journey, as a family, to overcome?

To be honest we have been very lucky and we haven’t had any real hurdles or hard moments.
Maybe worth to mention that I lost my job when I had my first baby, as we lost funding in the government changes, I was on a contract and no one was going to give a 4 months pregnant person a new job, in the end it was a blessing in disguise. I gained a new little best friend, we bought our first house and we got married. So the point here is, looking back at this trial in my life, which at that point was considered a small tragedy, it actually got me where I am here today. And we evolve from these things, from the hardships we overcome, throughout life.

What annoys you the most about Parenting ?

The lack of space, having a audience whilst on the toilet… and the talking that does not stop Hahahaha. They invade your life step by step, in a good way. I cannot imagine my life without them now, I don’t want to think how is it going to be when they grow up and move out of the house…

Now is your chance to embarrass your kid – tell me an embarrassing story

I have one which is really embrassing. One we love telling in our house is the time Allegra as a baby pooped on my face. We can’t even hide it because she tells everyone. She did a pop off and it got me on the face. There is no need for more details here, you can imagine.

We’re gonnna continue our series, Family Stories, here on the blog, to point out the ups and downs of being a Parent, there is no doubt that there is more ups than downs and over time all those bad moments and challenges they pale compared to the good things… so many good things…
